Five Open Books consist of five large, right-facing corners, or “books,” just west of the Lower Falls Amphitheater. This is a great introduction to multi-pitch climbing, with lower-angled, featured cracks all in the 5.6 – 5.10 range. Sunny, and with a short approach, this is a popular spot. Combine one of these routes with Selaginella (5.8), or one of the other routes, on the Second Tier for a longer adventure.
Great introduction to multi-pitch trad climbing. Protection-friendly, lower-angled cracks and awesome views. Careful of loose rocks at the topouts.
Approach: From Camp 4 or Yosemite Lodge head east, toward Yosemite Village, on the Valley Loop Trail to the Lower Yosemite Falls trail. From the straightaway on the Lower Falls trail look for a climber’s trail heading up and left into the woods.
Descent: Walk west on a climber's trail for a few hundred meters until an open slab area. Continue west and down across the slabs on 3rd/4th class. Below the slab follow the trail east and down along the base back to the start of the routes.
