Sperlonga

Lazio, IT

On beautiful beaches on Itlay’s west coast, between the metropolitan areas of Rome and Naples, arise the walls that carry the history of sport climbing in central and southern Italy. Between the towns of Sperlonga and Gaeta there are countless quality limestone walls reaching up to the sky. The crags and routes were almost exclusively bolted on slabby and vertical terrain. Specialists for overhanging terrain will find a pleasant surprise at Spiaggia dell’Arenauta: the fabulous Grotta dell’Arenauta. The crag is located directly on the beach, the rock is littered with tufas and guarantees fantastic climbing; due to its location, the crag is not among the cleanest. The good quality holds and footholds will let any doubt disappear quickly, though. Also Paretone on Monte Moneta offers overhangs. The long endurance routes create a feeling of freedom. A classic not to be missed is Parete del Chiromante, which also has bolted and traditionally protected multi-pitch routes. The classic route Flippout is part of the climibing history in Sperlonga. Sperlonga is an ideal destination for everybody climbing in the 6th French grades. There are many routes in this difficulty range, both long and short and mostly highly recommendable.
