Agios Andreas

Peloponneso, GR

Agios Andreas is a village 40km north of Leonidio (45 minutes to drive) and 6km south of Astros. Built at the foot of a hill not far from the sea, it is surrounded by silvery olive groves. Southwest of the village, a vertical and overhanging limestone cliff of perfect quality rises up to a 20–40m height. On the right, the orange section is decorated with beautiful tufa formations. On the left, the grey slabs are mostly vertical or low-angle. The crag location is quiet and pretty, with unobstructed views to the sea, the resort of Astros to the north, and inland, the bulk of mighty Mount Parnon (1935m). The lively square in the village is a good place for a drink or food stop after climbing. There are also a few fish tavernas down by the water, as well as some rental accommodations. __Climbing__ On limestone of excellent quality with steep grey walls and overhanging orange, tufa-heavy rock. In total, there are 35 well-bolted routes (4c–8b), mostly in the 5c–8a range. Easier routes (4c–6b) are on the left. Some glued-on holds have been reported on the very hard routes. The first 20 routes were equipped by Andy Long in 2019/20. In October 2020, 15 more easy to mid-grade routes were added by the same CLIMB GREECE team that opened sector Arcadia (Aris Theodoropoulos, Claude Idoux, Dimitris Titopoulos, Dimitra Klaoudatou, Kostas Grafanakis, Tiia Porri, and Chris Ziavras). __Gear__ A single 80m rope + 20 QDs. __Conditions__ Cool. Good for morning climbing on the warm spring, autumn, and summer days. Also good for winter afternoons. The rock dries quickly after rainfall, but it is not protected in case of heavy rain. __Shade (Exposure: NW)__ Until 13:00–14:00. __Kids__ Good. There are some nice picnic spots near the crag.
