Houdenbek

Western Cape, ZA

Houdenbek is a truly awesome place with as much rock as you could hope for in a lifetime. Although there is a plethora of trad climbing stretching up the valley, all the sport climbing takes place on the crags directly above the dam and has a range of good to excellent routes from easy to moderately hard. The climbing is steeper than it looks and very varied with the steeper routes on the right side and the more vertical, but tricky routes in the centre. Although on first impression the rock looks a bit flaky (in some areas), most of the flakes are good and provide good, welcome holds. The cenral routes are on impeccable rock. Houdenbek Crag is one of the true gems of a crag to be discovered in recent years.
