Gairloch

Scotland, GB

Trout Lake: Opened by Pierre Fuentes, they give some accessible problems on a fierce conglomerate-style rock from 3 to 7a. The test piece is Taobh Grianach na Bheatha (7a), a sit start to the hanging arête left of the cracked bloc. Also good is Original Route Direct (6a) taking the central wall of the right split bloc, technical at the top. Loch Maree Blocs: These fun and accessible low blocs provide good sport in the easier grades, with a few roof test pieces. The blocs cluster around the Cannon Bloc with its odd rock feature, and the Howff Bloc, with further outlying blocs. There is plenty more to explore uphill under An Cearcaill (parking at The Castle) further east. A good problem is Howff Bloc Lip (6a+), a sit start on the right taking the lip left to rock over on good holds above the rock plinth. Goat Bloc: The best problems are Le Chevre (6b) - the face lip and slopers problem, Ghabhar (6b) the SS onto a pebbled slab, and Billy the Kid (6a), which starts the same but goes right along the ramp onto the slab.
