Loch Katrine

Scotland, GB

Situated on the hilly flanks at the south end of Loch Katrine, this collection of stones is most concentrated in the south-east corner above the dam on the path to the Bealach nam Bo (‘pass of the cattle’). These popular boulders have some of the best mica-schist in the Central Highlands. Rough in texture, with good landings and a fine outlook, the blocs have been climbed on intermittently by Jon Read and friends until a rush in the dry conditions of 2003 developed their full potential. They are best in spring, before the bracken gets too high and the midges call time.
