Loupas

Peloponnese, GR

__Loupas__ is a new sector not far from Leonidio. It is located on the right side of the entrance to the Dafnon River gorge. High above is Pounta peak, which crowns the crags Yellow Wall, Theatro, Thalassa, and Pounta. Loupas is the massive southeast-facing wall. Even though the steep wall reaches a height of 50–80m, most routes are shorter than that. __Climbing__ Both the main crag and sub-sector Acropolis feature good, technical face climbing on vertical limestone with many small ledges, pockets, and other thin cracks. As with other crags in the area, though, when the crag is newly equipped the rock is doubtful, especially at the red and white parts, and much traffic is needed to improve. (Case in point: sector Jupiter. A major crag now, but it took a while—and lots of climbing on dubious rock—for the quality of rock to be revealed.) On the bright side: all routes are very well-protected, so follow the bolts. At this writing there are about 30 routes at Loupas, mainly 6b+ to 7b, equipped in early 2020 by the Remy Brothers, Marcel Noverraz, and Fred Moessner, with assistance from Yannis and Iakovos Metaxotos. Sub-sector Acropolis, further up to the right, features nearly 15 more routes, mostly 6b–7a, equipped by Gary Gibson in 2019. __Gear__ A single 80m rope + 20 QDs for the longest routes. __Conditions__ Good for climbing in the afternoon in spring and fall, or in the morning sun in winter. __Shade (Exposure: SE)__ After 14:00. __Kids__ No. The walk is long, steep, and in the sun, and the terrain beneath the cliffs is steep and uneven.
