Kastraki

Peloponnese, GR

__Kastraki__ is one of the most user-friendly crags in Kyparissi. It is located in the middle section of the village, above the church, and not far from the beach, in lush surroundings with beautiful views. It has all the makings of a popular crag: limestone of very solid quality, densely bolted low- to mid-grade routes (5a–6c), a convenient location, and a very easy and short approach. All in all, it is an excellent mid-grade crag practically inside the village. Extra bonus: great photos can be taken here, with the picturesque houses and the main beach of Kyparissi in the background. Kastraki was equipped by Aris Theodoropoulos and Claude Idoux as part of the CLIMB KYPARISSI PROJECT in 2015. The cliff was covered in shrubs and other thorny vegetation, so cleaning alone required several days of grunt work. However, the quality and location of the cliff made it all worthwhile. __Climbing__ On a total of 27 routes from 5a–7a. On the left, routes from 5a–6b+ on a vertical, compact wall up to 35m high, full of hidden pockets and sharp edges. On the upper right, a shorter overhanging red wall with tufas, big holds, and gym-like routes. The majority of route names are nicknames of local captains from years past who are now reposing at the cemetery just below the cliff. It is a nice way to pay tribute, and we think they’d approve. __Gear__ A single 70m rope + 18 QDs. __Conditions__ Best for spring and autumn, but summer climbing is also possible in the morning. You can go straight to the beach afterwards. __Shade (Exposure: SW)__ Until about 13:30. __Kids__ Just OK. The path is short, but there is not much space beneath the cliffs and terrain can be steep. It is best for supervised kids to play down by the parking area next to the church, or across the road in the olive grove/parking area.
