Rocca Rossa (Mezzaluna)

Liguria, IT

Driving in direction of the village Veravo the spectacular Rocca Rossa comes into sight. The wall of about 100 metres height presents itself like a huge block of grey red limestone, which emerges out of the forest. Its vertical walls which are sometimes blocked by overhanging sections and roofs strongly call the climbers. Logical therefore that this was the first wall to be visited by the local pioneer Claudio Laureri who bolted some multi pitch routes in the early 90’s.When interest moved on to the Bausu, the Rocca fell in the hands of Manlio Motto. He always followed his ethics and bolted some of the nicest routes from the bottom. The resulting climbing style on vertical walls with splendid pockets and drip holes is not comparable to the single pitch routes of the valley. Here bolts are sometimes rather run out and moves often can’t be bypassed. In short on has to climb with body and mind but the effort is much rewarded by the quality of the routes. Some of the nicest multi pitch routes in the whole of Liguria can be found on the Mezzaluna. Rocca Rossa has seen its popularity increase in these last few years, Danilo Bo has equipped some complex monopitches from the bottom up, while Guido Cortese and Paolo Ramò set up from the bottom a beautiful, difficult route in "Motto" style.
