Palace

Kalymnos, GR

Palace is a long band of cliffs near Skalia village that includes sub-sectors Thalassa, Baby House, and its namesake Palace, a small cliff with a famous arch. A photogenic arch and distinctive rock formations. Varied rock, from slabs to slight overhangs, and climbing on unusual features. __Busy__ 1/3 __Climbing__ Everything from grey slabs to slightly overhanging climbing on unusual features. At Thalassa , sharp red/grey rock, routes mostly in the mid-grades, and some further potential. At Baby House, an attractive crag with nearly 30 routes, mostly athletic climbing on overhanging red rock with big pockets, but also on somewhat sharp grey rock. There are also two beautiful but painful cracks, rarely found on limestone, and a nice route that follows a big flake. At Palace, the smallest of the sub-sectors, average, mostly overhanging rock with a few tufa blobs and huecos, and polished rock on the easier routes. Despite the polish, though, Palace features some very impressive rock formations. The famous rock arch shown on the left is widely photographed, and more than a few climbers have staged wedding photos here. __Conditions__ Very warm and protected from the north wind. Ideal for climbing in cold winter conditions or cloudy days. __Shade (Exposure: E, S, SE)__ Only a few hours of morning shade, but Thalassa Far Left comes back into the shade in late afternoon. Check each sub-sector for details. _Thalassa_ Until 10:00 (and again after 16:00 at Far Left) _Baby House & Palace Main_ Until 11:30 __Kids__ Quite good. The walk-in is quick and easy, and there are several unobstructed play areas around the cliffs.
