Gerakios

Kalymnos, GR

Gerakios is a wide area of cliffs above the upper road and Myrties village, has grown into an all-around crag offering almost every style of Kalymnos climbing. Several crags with diverse characters, from steep pumpy caves to vertical wall climbs. __Busy__ 1/3 __Climbing__ Almost everything from steep caves to technical wall climbing. __Conditions__ Sunny and warm, best for climbing on winter days. However, summer climbing is also possible in early morning. Exposed to the rain. __Shade (Exposure: S)__ Until 12:00–12:30 at all sub-sectors except Spitfire (shade until 16:00). __Kids__ So-so. The path is long and requires some scrambling, but most sub-sectors have fairly suitable areas. __Spitfire__ is a wall above and to the left of Gerakios Main (and to the right of sector Zeus). The large roof along the top of the peaceful crag keeps it shady until late afternoon. Climbing is technical and powerful on well-featured, varied, high-quality rock with a few sharp bits. The walk-in is long at 35–40 minutes, but the cliff is worthwhile. __Under the Rainbow__ is a small, well-bolted sharp grey wall with immaculate climbing in the Verdon style and a 35-minute walk-in. __Gerakios Main__ is a balancy, technical slab with medium-quality crumbly rock. Some routes stand out, and this is the cliff nearest to the road (15 minutes), so it is certainly worth a visit.
