Wild Iris Main Wall

Fremont County, US

This is the cliff where it all began. These days, it’s not the most popular crag, nor the one with the greatest concentration of routes, but it’s the one that put Lander on the map. The routes are short and powerful, the stone wonderful to climb on, and each section of the cliff has a unique character. Wether you are looking for steep bulges, roofs, or technical faces, you’ll find great routes in abundance. Climbing at the Main Wall is best in the fall, but can be great all summer long. Trees provide sufficient shade, and the cool breezes coming off the Wind Rivers to the west can keep the temperatures nice, even when it is scorching hot in Lander. There are occasional afternoon thunderstorms in July and August. Avoid trying to beat these storms back to the parking lot - the exposed ridge between the crag and the parking is dangerous in a thunderstorm. It’s best to just wait a few minutes and hike out once the weather clears.
