Smrka

Dalmatia, HR

The island of Brač is Croatia's biggest island and has a good ferry connection with Split. Canyon Smrka is located on the south-west coast of the island, and could easily be the most impressive climbing wall in Croatia. The cliff was found by local climber Ivo Ljubetić - Šteka and the first routes was bolted in 2015 by French climbers from the FFCAM excellence group. They did a fantastic job bolting many routes in just ten days (October 22-31, 2015). So far, there are 20-30 routes, with most being 30-50m long. The cliff is slightly to very overhanging, and the grades of the current routes are in the upper levels of difficulty. All routes are demanding and require remarkable endurance. Tufas are found on almost all routes, and crimps are also common. Canyon Smrka is a must-visit crag for climbers in the higher-end of 7th grades and especially for those seeking even harder grades. The season for climbing is spring, summer, fall, but some winter days are good if it is a dry winter. What makes Smrka great is the quality of the rock, the beauty of the routes and the fact that it is in the shade until around 4-5PM in the summer. This makes Smrka an excellent choice for summer holidays but climbing here is possible almost all year around. During your stay in Brač, it is recommended to visit the famous 'Blaca monastery', located on your way to the crag, the beach 'Bol', the restaurant 'Kopačina', the highest peak of the island 'Vidova Gora', and rest of the rich tourism on offer on the island.
