Cubells
Catalonia, ES
Seen from the main C-26 road these striking limestone walls, just north of the village of Cubells, appear far more imposing than their mere 30m height would suggest. The first climbs here date back to the early 1980s but Cubells somehow lapsed into obscurity during the final years of the 20th century. Fortunately, local climbers have recently resurrected the zone, cleaning and re-equipping the older routes as well as establishing a surprising number of new ones. The rock is generally vertical and of excellent quality, giving technical climbing on small sharp holds, while the outlook, affording expansive views over the fertile plains of southern Lleida, is very pleasant. The south- easterly orientation of the cliffs means climbing is possible not only on sunny winter mornings and early afternoons, but also during summer evenings, when cooling breezes often help lower the temperature.
