Psili Riza

Kalymnos, GR

Psili Riza was created specifically for the 2012 The North Face Climbing Festival. It was the venue for the PROject Competition, with 27 very technical wall climbs equipped mostly by Simone Moro and Jacopo Larcher that same year. Located inland, high above the village of Panormos, it enjoys good views across Linaria, Kantouni, and the sea (a nice change from the “routine” view of Telendos). Sweeping views notwithstanding, Psili Riza was not a very good choice: it is far and hot and not special enough for Kalymnos. __Why is this an app-only crag? __ It is far, it is hot, and it is not special enough for Kalymnos—thus, it is a seldom-visited crag. __Climbing__ Old-school style, very atypical for Kalymnos, on vertical or slightly overhanging walls with small features, crimps, and the occasional tufa blob. Routes need more cleaning, brushing, and traffic to improve—not very likely to happen, since nobody ever really goes there. __Conditions__ Hot and protected from the north wind. Ideal for winter, as the routes stay dry, except immediately after strong rainfall. Also good for late fall and early spring, on dry days with low humidity and temperatures around 15°C. __Shade__ Exposure: S After 13:00. __Kids __ The approach is very long; otherwise, there are some suitable areas around the cliffs. __Busy__ 1/3
