There is no way around the crag Falkenstein for all those coming to East Tyrol for climbing. Two big spectacular rock towers, consisting of a mix of marble and limestone, make up the sectors. It is even possible to climb here on sunny and warm winter days, assuming feasible snow coverage. The steep and exposed routes require quite a bit of endurance and feature a variety of hold types. The most rewarding routes are in the seventh and eight French grade.
Follow the paved road to the last house and pass it up. At the subsequent turn, continue straight and walk through a gate, with a trail starting right behind it. This trail crosses a small meadow and then leads through the forest, first to the small and then to the big Falkenstein.
From Lienz drive north in the direction of Matrei in Osttirol / Felbertauern. Once you get to Matrei, do not turn towards the center of the town but continue for another bit on the main road. A few hundred meters after Matrei’s exit North, turn right in the direction of Glanz and follow the inclined road. Do not follow the first sign indicating Falkenstein, but continue uphill. After about three kilometres you reach a parking lot on the left side of the road, just before the last house.
