Zobolo

Peloponnese, GR

Zobolo (pronounced ZOH-bo-lo) is a new crag with loads of potential in Cavo Maleas, a breathtaking location on the southeast tip of the Peloponnese. Cavomaliás, as the cape is known locally, was infamous amongst ancient mariners for its unpredictable seawaters, and later on it became known for its enormous stone lighthouse. Still remote and impressive, with the blue sea expanding as far as the eye can see, it is an area of serene, unspoilt beauty. The organization of climbing in Zobolo is a case study in teamwork and community involvement. The nearest village to the crag is Agios Nikolaos. Local resident Panayiotis Livanos, together with a non-climbing group from the village, became involved in the making of the crag alongside the equippers by volunteering for the thankless work of opening the approach paths and clearing the terrain beneath the cliffs. Fortunately, the municipality also recognized the importance of supporting alternative tourism and secured funding for the project. The Athenian climbers Dimitris Titopoulos and Dimitra Klaoudatou were instrumental in bringing the project to fruition, and George Koukis, Dimitris Tsitsikas, Yannis Torelli and Claude Remy are among the other climbers/equippers who assisted.
