Rocca dell'Ulivo

Liguria, IT

This is the biggest wall in Valle del Vero and climbers like Matteoli, one of the pioneers who set up the first route in the area, have been coming here since the 1970s. No other routes were opened until 2005, when Andrea Giorda from Turin started setting up routes from the bottom up. Some of his routes, Hotel Varatella and Panoramica for instance, are already becoming classic routes many climbers can try, while other routes require some preparation: Wall Rats and G.T for instance. At the base of the Rocca there are several new monopitch sectors. On the left there are the varied rock of Sasso del Rio, mainly routes in the 6 grade, then the wonderful Grotta dell’Ulivo with 7 grade routes, perfect for climbers in excellent shape; then Antro degli Spettri - a new sector - with a sharp wall and wonderful overhanging routes (between 7 and 8 grade). On the right there is Placca Curzio with enjoyable slab routes, and finally Giardino del Re with overhanging tufas and higher grades. Above this last sector there are Belvedere and Arena.
