Portrane

Ireland East,

The bouldering in Portrane is on cliffs and narrow alleys with powerful moves between relatively low friction, polished limestone slopers and edges. Due to the nature of the rock, problems can sometimes be indistinct and dictated by holds rather than features - this combined with the sand heights varying from year to year makes grading problems even less accurate than normal. I have omitted the more convoluted lines, linkups and variations for clarity and brevity. Seen as a whole there appears to be a lot of climbing in Portrane. However it’s rare that everything would be climbable at any one time due to tides and seepage. The landings are generally very good, either flat sand or stony beach. A towel is useful for cleaning sand off your shoes and drying damp holds. Be careful, the rock isn’t the most solid - don’t take it for granite - especially above the high tide mark. There have been some serious injuries due to holds unexpectedly snapping. Some of the best problems include "Leviathan", "Girls On Film", "X-Men", "Mr. Uppitty", "Rhubarb Jam", "Jean Bart", "Lemon Sole" and "Mr. Quiet".
