Symi-Ai Giorgis Dysalotos
Agean Islands,
Ai Giorgis Dysalotos (pronounced ay YOR-ghis thee-SA-lo-tos) is on the east coast of Symi. With access only by sea, the beach of Ai Giorgis will no doubt become a climber’s favorite spot on Symi: a vertical-to-overhanging limestone cliff rises to a height of about 300m over a stunning beach. According to local lore, the rock face was ‘cut’ by a horse-riding Ai Giorgis (St George) as he ripped through the air with his sword. Beneath the cliffs is a typical Greek ensemble: chapel, handful of trees, gorgeous beach and deep blue sea. A stone’s throw away across the sea is the coast of Turkey.
